What is Collagen and why is everybody talking about it?

You might have found that everyone is talking about collagen, it's
in your social media feeds, your hairdresser told you she’s taking it, even
your neighbour is taking it! However, you may be yet to try it and want to understand it all a bit more first.

Collagen is a natural protein that we already produce. It works to
create the structure of our connective tissues. It is the key component
of our skin, muscles, bones and other parts of the body. As we age the production of collagen begins to decline.

Research has suggested that our natural collagen production begins to reduce in our mid 20’s-30’s and by the age of 40 our collagen drops significantly! As our collagen production dwindles the transfer of moisture to our cells begin to shrink, and over time our elastin fibres start to break and lose their elasticity.

In addition to the natural ageing process, there are also many environmental factors that can affect the appearance of our skin. As society is becoming more aware of ways to become healthier and prevent the signs of ageing, many people have turned to collagen supplements.

Clinical studies have shown that oral collagen supplementation significantly increased
skin hydration and elastin after 8 weeks of intake. See research pages attached for more information.

Key Ingredients

Astaxanthin

A game changer in the supplement world and one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature.  Astaxanthin is found in natural sources such as algae, yeast and Salmon! Some of its reported benefits include improved skin, immune, eye and brain health. It has also been found to improve athletic performance too! Tonic X is the first liquid multi-supplement to include a whopping 10mg of Astaxanthin in each daily shot, ensuring you are getting the most potent and effective formula.

Collagen

The one everybody is talking about! Collagen provides the structure to your skin, hair, nails, and connective tissues, and helps maintain skin elasticity and joint flexibility. People are choosing collagen supplements to support the body's natural collagen production, especially since we’re constantly reminded that as we age and that production decreases! Not only have we added 12,500mg of Marine Collagen to our unique formula to ensure that you get the maximum dose every day, we’ve included Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Biotin, Zinc, and Copper. These vitamins and minerals work together in supporting skin health, joint function, and overall well-being!

Probiotics

Probiotics are renowned for their crucial role in gut health.  The beneficial bacteria can help aid digestion, enhance immune function and may help prevent or treat digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). More recently, scientists have also found a strong link between gut and brain health, the gut-brain axis (GBA). Tonic X is the only liquid multi-supplement in the world to include probiotics. To ensure maximum efficacy of our probiotics we have micro-encapsulated them to protect them from being broken down by the digestive tract before reaching the gut. This ensures they reach your gut in their most effective form.

What is Marine Collagen and why hydrolysed?

You may have seen lots of jargon about different collagen types, more
specifically marine and bovine collagen. Marine collagen is sourced from fish
skin, scales and bones whereas bovine collagen is derived from sources such as
bovine cartilage. Hydrolysed collagen simply means that the peptide proteins
have been broken down into smaller molecules to make it easier for the body to
absorb.  You may also have seen that there are different types of
collagens; type 1, type 2, type 3, these all work differently in the body.

Types of collagen

type 1

Type 1 collagen is the most prevalent in your body and provides the structure to your skin and other connective tissues. It plays a key role in keeping your skin plump and firm.

type 2

Type 2 collagen is found less commonly in the body and is found within the cartilage in certain parts of the body. Research has found that type 2 collagen is more beneficial to joint health than your skin.

type 3

Type 3 collagen can also be found in your skin and bones and according to research has the same role as Type 1 collagen in promoting skin elasticity. It has been suggested that Type 3 collagen production decreases more dramatically in the body!

Collagen is widely considered a safe supplement with no known negative side effects. While our collagen is sourced from fish, we guarantee it’s completely odourless and tasteless, so you’ll enjoy the natural berry flavour!

We have included both Type 1 & 3 collagen to Tonic X to ensure that they work
together to help support not only your skin, hair and nails, but all other
connective tissues in the body.

Since Type 2 collagen is sourced differently, we couldn’t include it in Formulation XX – but stay tuned, exciting new formulations are on the way!

Astaxanthin

The exciting one!

This could be a completely new supplement to you and you might be wondering why we’ve added this to our formula. We’ve tried to break this down...

Astaxanthin is a Xanthophyll carotenoid

Astaxanthin is a Xanthophyll carotenoid, it is a natural antioxidant found in certain algae, fungi, and the flesh of certain seafood. Interestingly, Xanthophylls are naturally occurring pigments found in various plants, algae, and microorganisms. They belong to a larger group of carotenoids, which are responsible for the red, orange, and yellow colours in many fruits and vegetables.

Xanthophylls are quite unique as they contain oxygen in their chemical structure.

Research and studies have suggested that Astaxanthin has many positive effects on the body, such as eye, joint, and immune health to name a few.

Astaxanthin is often associated with anti-ageing benefits due to its potent antioxidant properties and its ability to target several factors
linked to ageing! Astaxanthin has been linked with improvements in skin healthas it may help by protecting against free radicals and reducing inflammation.

Studies have shown that it can have positive effects on your skin health by helping to improve skin elasticity and moisture levels whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has also been suggested that Astaxanthin can provide a certain level of protection against UV induced sun damage, helping to prevent premature ageing caused by sun exposure!

*Note: Astaxanthin is not a substitute for sunscreen!*

After months of research and consultations with scientists and nutritionists, we discovered that many already take astaxanthin in powders or pills. We’re confident it’s the perfect ingredient to enhance our formula, supporting both collagen production and your overall health and well-being!
